Inn History
The Pinehurst Area's
Friendliest B & B!
* The Inn at the Bryant House was originally built in 1900 for the Bryant sisters. In 1913 Julia Thagard Bryant chose to expand the house into a tourist home and called it the Lantana. The Lantana made a perfect mid way point between Florida and New York right on US 1.
Garages were built for each of the rooms and at one time surrounded the property which made it a unique place to stay.
* In 1946 Mr. & Mrs McGowan purchased the Inn and continued the Inn as a boarding home for many years. They are most noted for having a man dressed in all whites flagging people to stay at the Inn. During the time of their ownership, US 1 moved 1 block and the Inn was not in sight of travelers, occupancy rates became very low. The Inn grew into disrepair and was being considered for demolition.
*In 1989 Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin purchased the Inn and lovingly restored the Lantana to its original splendor and renamed the B&B to the Inn at the Bryant House. They spent a lot of money and time paying special attention to each detail to bring the Inn back to the old style and into today’s world.
* Since then Mr. & Mrs. Gregory owned the Inn for several years and added various special touches to the Inn. Mr. & Mrs. Steele continued the lodging tradition and added unique special charm throughout the B&B.

* Current Owners:
In June 2007, Matt and Ashley Baker and Shirley Starkey purchased the Inn at the Bryant House and have some exciting plans for this beautiful home. As they continue to run the Inn as a bed and breakfast, they are focusing on attention to first class service and to bringing the local community into the future plans for the Inn.
Matt and Ashley were married in 2004 and have a beautiful baby girl. Although both Matt and Ashley were born in the south, both families moved out west when they were babies. Destiny brought them together and now they have returned to their southern heritage. The couple met and graduated from Northern Arizona University and received degrees in Hotel/Restaurant Management. They both have several years in the hospitality industry working for both private and corporate hospitality companies. They are excited to be Innkeepers and are very happy to spend so much time with their daughter.
Shirley is Ashley’s mother and in addition to helping with the baby, being an Innkeeper and helping with breakfast, Shirley has a strong financial background and has provided business consulting to corporations as well as small establishments. Shirley continues her real estate background as a Real Estate broker in the Sandhills area and recently joined The B&B and Country Inn Marketplace to cover the rapidly expanding Inn businesses in eastern NC. Shirley has traveled extensively and truly understands the old adage "there's no place like home". She is very happy to be able to spend so much time with her family.
We purchased the Inn to share our passion for hospitality, be closer to family and a great area to live and raise a family. This is truly a family owned business and we look forward to serving you.
